Album Story

Following the success of the Grammy-nominated, genre-bending album Sekou Andrews & The String Theory, KOUMAMI is another creative exploration from spoken word artist Sekou Andrews. Combining his name Sekou with “umami”—the fifth flavor that adds “savory” to sour, salty, bitter, and sweet—Sekou coined the phrase KOUMAMI to highlight the journey every artist takes to bring their unique flavor to the world.
“I wanted to explore the fact that spoken word poetry isn’t tethered to any one genre,” Sekou says. With styles ranging from afrobeat, soul, and alternative to hip-hop, electronica, and orchestral, he hopes KOUMAMI makes spoken word the true star of the record.
The album’s star-studded list of features, writers, and producers—including Jordin Sparks, Omari Hardwick, David Ryan Harris, Celeste Prince, Marcus Bellringer, Eric Dawkins, and Matt B—helped bring his vision to life. “I hope this album conveys the experiences I was having while writing it—and makes others want to fall in love, climb a mountain, hug their child, join a revolution, and jump off a creative cliff while building wings on the way down,” Sekou says.

What They’re Saying

Like Einstein and The Beatles—and every other trailblazer that was initially dismissed—Sekou Andrews shows us how innovation is about exploring the unexpected

I’m beginning to think there isn’t a crowd this brotha can’t leave on its feet. He’s the Dude… the future Dude.

Featured Singles

“The Chosen One: ACT 1” (feat. LION BABE)

If a song were to win the award for “Most Likely To Leave You Dancing In The Club To A Poetry Track”, this would be that song.
The poem is an honest, playful pledge that will leave you laughing, lusting, and reliving the moment you first fell in love. The production—by Mustapha LeBeau, Tony “Fonz” Walker & Keith “Youngin” George II—is an infectious Afrobeat track that could fall seamlessly between Tyla and Burna Boy on the dance floor without missing a step. And the hook adds the deliciously catchy icing to this cake with vocals by electronic soul duo LION BABE.

“A Love Poem Called I Hate” (feat. Matt B)

There are three simple reasons why this song will be stuck in your head for months after hearing it. First, the production by heavyweight David Ryan Harris—with Celeste Prince and Sekou Andrews—is a genre-bending pendulum; swinging between pop, alternative, hip and electronica and soul, that is utterly hypnotizing.
Second, the hook, sung by Grammy-winning vocalist Matt B, is so catchy it’s the stuff that memes and viral videos are made of.
And lastly, the poem is outrageously catchy and relatable, because we’ve all ended it with someone we love, only to suffer reminders of them everywhere for months after the breakup. Hilariously dark, and aggressively vulnerable, this track is the song you will love to hate, about the person you hate to love.

“Love Don’t Care” (feat. Jordin Sparks, Omari Hardwick)

If you’ve ever found love against all odds… If you’ve ever had plans for love, only to find out that love had different plans for you… If you’ve ever needed permission to love who you want, when you’re ready, how you choose, against all odds… this is your anthem.
With a beautiful poem co-written with Grammy nominated poet & actor Omari Hardwick, an infectious hook penned by gospel sensation Eric Dawkins, production laced by De-Capo, POSTA, Keith “Youngin” George II & Simon Kempner, and the whole dish marinated in the breathtaking voice of superstar Jordin Sparks, this song, simply put, checks all the boxes.
