Following the success of the Grammy-nominated, genre-bending album Sekou Andrews & The String Theory, KOUMAMI is another creative exploration from spoken word artist Sekou Andrews. Combining his name Sekou with “umami”—the fifth flavor that adds “savory” to sour, salty, bitter, and sweet—Sekou coined the phrase KOUMAMI to highlight the journey every artist takes to bring their unique flavor to the world.
“I wanted to explore the fact that spoken word poetry isn’t tethered to any one genre,” Sekou says. With styles ranging from afrobeat, soul, and alternative to hip-hop, electronica, and orchestral, he hopes KOUMAMI makes spoken word the true star of the record.
The album’s star-studded list of features, writers, and producers—including Jordin Sparks, Omari Hardwick, David Ryan Harris, Celeste Prince, Marcus Bellringer, Eric Dawkins, and Matt B—helped bring his vision to life. “I hope this album conveys the experiences I was having while writing it—and makes others want to fall in love, climb a mountain, hug their child, join a revolution, and jump off a creative cliff while building wings on the way down,” Sekou says.
